2010 Multi-session classes:

quilts

Quilters University-Beginning
(6 classes), Judy Cummings, $120 for series, supply list. 

Learn techniques from a pro to start you on your quilting career:  rotary cutting, ¼-inch seams, fabric selection, log cabin blocks, flying geese blocks, friendship star blocks, and more.  You will use Alex Anderson’s “Start Quilting” book, make a wall hanging, and have a lot of fun

Sat:  Apr 10 & 24; May 15 & 22, Jun 12 & 26, from 10:00 a.m.  – 1:00 p.m.

Hand Appliqué
(3 classes), Judy Cummings, $60 for series, supply list.

Continue to improve your appliqué skills and learn new techniques. Uses the book “The New Appliqué Sampler” by Becky Goldsmith & Linda Jenkins. (This series is for those who have taken Judy’s appliqué classes before.  There is a beginning appliqué class on Tue, Feb 9.) 4th Tue from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (Jan 26, Feb 23, Mar 23).

Beginning Machine Quilting
(2 classes), Dana Lahargoue, $40 for series, supply list. 

In the first session, you'll learn machine set up and basic shapes and backgrounds and will have lots of time in class to practice. In the second session, you'll take your new found skills and put them to work on a continuous line design which you can use as a small wall hanging or pillow. This class is the perfect opportunity to learn from a wonderful instructor. Dana is an award winning machine quilter with many years of machine quilting and teaching experience.

Crazy Quilting
(3 classes), Toni Jordan, $60 for series, supply list. 

This class will consist of three sessions.  In the first session we will construct a 14” block using a wide variety of fabrics; cottons, silks, tapestries, velvets, linens…  In the second class we will start the embellishments.  You will learn a variety of embroidery stitches using different threads and techniques. The third class you will continue with the embroidery and embellish using buttons, laces, jewelry and other “finds”. 

Series A:  Sat, Jan 23, 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.; Sat, Feb 13 & Sat, Mar 6; 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Series B:  Thu, Feb 11, 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.; Thu, Feb 25 & Thu, Mar 11, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

  • American Girl Doll Sit-and-Sew, 4th Wednesday of the month, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., Contact:  Susan Mudgett.  All you moms, grandmas, and aunties ... come and join Susan and share patterns and ideas to make garments for your special little girl's American Girl (or other 18") doll.  Susan will have lots of adorable clothes to share with you.  Bring your sewing machine (or knitting needles, crochet hooks, etc.) and be prepared to be creative and have a great time. 
  • The Appliqué Society (Fair Oaks Finishers), 1st Tuesday of the month, 10 a.m. – noon, Contact:  Judy Cummings

  • ASG Fair Oaks Group, 2nd Wednesday of the month, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m., Contact: Kris Ogley
  • Blankets for Preemies, 1st Thursday of the month, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., Contact:  Susan Berbec at sberbec@sbcglobal.net.   No fees, but pre-registration is appreciated.  These blankets are for the Sutter Roseville NICU.  A blanket on top of an isolette helps retain warmth, muffles noises, and allows parents to easily identify their baby, and the blanket goes with the family when the baby’s stay at the NICU is finished.  Bring supplies to make a blanket of your choice (quilted, knitted, crocheted, ‘fleeced’, etc.) and a potluck dish to share.  Finished blankets should be 36”x36”.  This is a good opportunity for your people looking to fulfill community service requirements.  If you would like to donate supplies or participate on your own at home, contact Susan.

Have a finished quilt top, but can’t decide how you want to quilt it?  Bring it to this class and Cindy will help you choose your quilting designs using her large stash of stencils.  If you have quilt tops that need basting, she will have her basting table and supplies available.  If you need that extra help with your free motion quilting skills, bring your machine and marked/basted top and she can hone those skills with great tips and techniques. 

  • Binding, Judy Cummings, Fri, Mar 5, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., $20 fee, supply list.  Judy will guide you through the last step of creating your masterpiece, binding your beautiful quilt.  (This class is for Quilters’ University graduates or experienced quilters.)

    Expand your machine quilting skills by learning this whole cloth quilting technique.  This method creates raised surfaces on the quilt for a beautiful, dramatic effect. 

  • Embroidery Group, Mon, Mar 15, 10:00 a.m. – noon.
  • Crazy Quilting Group, Thu, Mar 18, 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
  • Blankets for Preemies, Fri, Mar 19, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  The group will not meet at Tayo's this month.  Instead, they will tour the Sutter Roseville NICU. 
 
  • Open Thread Bar, Cindy Needham, Sat, Mar 20, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., $40 fee, $10 kit, supply list.  Cindy is an educator for Superior Threads and she teaches this workshop for guilds on a national level and at many of the major quilt shows.  She will teach you the tips and techniques of using specialty threads, how to work with your machine tension, and correct needle usage. She will have an "open thread bar" available to you for the day so that you can play with these threads.  Floral panels, practice panels, batting packets, etc. are all prepared for you.  She will have a variety of quilts with her to demonstrate different threads and techniques.

  • Crochet on Hemstitching, Shenna Mealey, Wed, Mar 24, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., $15 fee, supply list.

    Learn how easy it is to create a decorative crocheted edge as an embellishment on burp cloths, bibs, blankets, and booties.  You will use a burp cloth as your class project, if you have no previous crochet experience.  If you want to make the hemstitched booties, you must have taken a previous hemstitch class. 

 
  • Maintain Your Bernina and Janome, Susan Berbec, Sat, Mar 27, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., $20 fee.

Are you intimidated by cleaning and lubricating your sewing machine?  You shouldn’t be.  It’s very easy and logical. We will get out the lint, take steps to retard lint build-up and put oil where it’s needed.  Please wear your grubbies or a generous apron for this class.  This class is not a substitute for a full service by a qualified technician.  You will learn to maintain your machine in peak condition between services.

  • Landscape Art Quilts, Phyllis Binkley, Fri, Apr 30, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., $40 fee, $45 kit (includes prepared fabrics, foundation, backing, batting, and binding strips). 

    All the materials for this project are included in the kit.  Phyllis will get you started by demonstrating how to build the landscape, step by step.  Included in the materials will be her hand-dyed fabrics for skies and distant mountains, hills, or mesas.  With the many choices of prepared fabrics, you will create your own original 12”x18” landscape.  Lots of photos and examples will be available for ideas.  You will learn to build a realistic or abstract landscape, show a deep space, use “atmospheric perspective”, use fussy cutting and combine many fabrics to make realistic foregrounds, use trapunto without slitting the back.  All you need to bring are pins and scissors.  Photos are optional.

  • Thread Painting 101, Phyllis Binkley, Sat, May 1, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., $40 fee, $15 kit, supply list.

This workshop is a “practice” experience on how to do free motion stitching for all parts of a landscape.  The skills are also useful for traditional appliqué.  If you are timid about free motion stitching, this workshop is for you.  The $15 kit includes all the items you need to practice on, such as sky, hills, trees, animals, flowers, grasses, etc.  Bring a good working sewing machine with feed dogs that go down for free motion stitching.

  • Linen Ladies, Cindy Needham, Sat May 8, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., $40 fee, supply list. 

Gather up your vintage tablecloths, dresser scarves, etc.  Cindy created this class from her love of creating whole-cloth vintage linen quilts.  During the first half of the class, Cindy will use her own large collection of vintage linens and quilts to teach you how to pick out designs, work with damaged or stained linens, and talk about special binding techniques, threads, diminishing your quilt backs, and more.  The second half of the class focuses on designing and marking your linens using Cindy's large stash of stencils.

 

Bali Briefcase and Bali Bag, Toni Jordan, Sun, May 9, noon – 3:00 p.m.

$40 fee, supply list. 

In this first session, you’ll learn how to make the strips that create these gorgeous bags, using Bali Pops and clothesline.  (Session 2 is May 23.)

  • Sashiko, June Goshi, Sat May 22, 2:00 – 5:00 p.m., $20 fee. 

    Sashiko is a decorative, functional form of embroidery that originated in Japan.  The running stitch technique traditionally used white thread on indigo cloth.  June has been creating beautiful Sashiko quilts for years and will share her methods and tips with you as you create your project.
