Quilt For The Cure
Quilt Block Challenge

In 2004, American Patchwork and Quilting magazine in partnership with the Susan G Komen Foundation and other quilting manufacturers sponsored a quilt block challenge to raise funds for further research for finding a cure for breast cancer. Tayo's customers supported this excellent event and shipped 20 completed quilts auctioned on eBay.

“ Granny Dances With the Stars ”

5th Annual Fairfield Elementary School Quilt

Designed, Pieced, & Bound by Dara Jwaideh Pleasants

Quilted by Mara Lindsey

This quilt was made for the 2003 Fairfield Auction, during my son Derek's 4th and final year at Fairfield as a 3rd Grader. Of the 37 larger 9-patch blocks in the quilt, I made 21 and received the other 16 in a “30's quilt block exchange”, where I made blocks and traded them with other quilters from all over the Greater Sacramento area. The print fabrics are a large variety of 1930 Reproductions, meaning that they closely resemble fabrics available in the US in the 1930 ' s – think of your Grandmother ' s or Great Grandmother ' s house dresses and aprons! The “ tipped ” orientation of the 9-patches makes them look to me like they are dancing around the central star. This explains the name!
